In
the summer of 2006, the 1% CLUB is expanding nationally
into West Africa. Teaming with the "Better Africa Foundation,"
started the first annual BAF sports camp in Cotonou, Benin.
Working with Emmanuel Akognon (Josh's father and CEO of
Better Africa Foundation), the camp included 450 prospects
for the sports of basketball and soccer. The 4-day camp,
which was held at the National Stadium in Benin, was a huge
success with the players, as well as with the Benin government.
The
1% Club was able to implement high level skill training
to the African players with unexpectantly a high achievement
rate. "I was amazed at how quickly they were able to pick
up the teaching principles. The players were so eager to
learn and attentive to everything we were throwing at them.
I don't think I ever got a lunch break due to the fact I
had so many players wanting to talk and have me show them
more about basketball. It was wonderful to be able to provide
them with resources and information to further motivate
them and give them hope." The ultimate goal of the BAF Sports
Camp is to provide scholarships to prospective student-athletes
in attending high schools in the US.
